Where solar loans stand in 2026

The News reported that solar loans are now linked to commercial KIBOR rates, because the State Bank of Pakistan subsidised refinance scheme has expired. Higher commercial rates make monthly instalments steeper than they were under the subsidised scheme.

At the same time, net billing lowered what exported power earns, which lengthens the payback of a system. Both changes mean you should check the sums on a loan before you sign.

Banks still offer products, and the examples below come from published reports and bank pages.

What banks usually check

The News also reported the following conditions across solar lending. Expect questions on them.

  • Debt burden. Standard limits on how much of your income goes to repayments can exclude fixed-income households.
  • Equipment as security. The solar equipment is hypothecated to the lender.
  • Insurance. Comprehensive insurance is mandatory, and frequent damage claims raise premiums.
  • Certified panels and qualified installers. Lenders vet the equipment and the installer.
  • Right-sized systems. Meezan said financing should match consumption and repayment ability.

How to prepare a loan application

A little work first saves weeks later.

  1. 1

Size the system from your bill

A bank wants to see that the system matches your use. Our system size guide shows how.

  2. 2

    Get an itemised written quote

Ask for the model of every major part, the warranty terms and the tax. We give itemised quotes you can take to a bank.

  3. 3

Ask the bank what it needs from the seller

Some banks keep lists of approved sellers or installers. Ask before you pay any advance.

  4. 4

    Gather your papers

Banks ask for identity, income and address documents. Ask your bank for its list.

  5. 5

    Do the sum

Compare the total repaid with the cash price, and with your expected savings under net billing.

Check the total, not the monthly amount

A small monthly amount over a long period can cost far more than the cash price. Ask for the total you will pay, the cash price, the markup and the charge for early settlement. The gap between the total and the cash price is the true cost of the loan.

Loans and net billing

Under net billing, savings come mainly from the power you use yourself, so a system sized for own use gives the most reliable savings against a monthly repayment. Our net billing guide explains the new rules. If a loan needs a grid connection, remember that K-Electric applications go through a PPIB pre-qualified vendor, which we are not.
