How a solar installation runs, step by step

The details vary by property, but a careful job follows this order.

  1. 1

    Share your bill and area

Send your latest K-Electric bill and tell us your area and building type on WhatsApp. This gives us enough to size the system and prepare a first estimate.

  2. 2

    Site visit

We look at roof space, shading, the water tank, the distribution board and the earthing. We check how panels can be reached for cleaning.

  3. 3

    Written, itemised quote

You receive a quote that names the panel, inverter and battery models, the mounting material, the cables, the protection and the warranty terms.

  4. 4

    Design sign-off and approvals

You confirm the design before work starts. A grid connection with K-Electric needs an application through a PPIB pre-qualified vendor, which we are not. Tell us early so the design fits what that vendor needs.

  5. 5

    Installation

The crew fixes the structure, mounts the panels, runs DC and AC cabling, installs the inverter and protection, and completes the earthing.

  6. 6

    Commissioning and handover

We test the system, set up the monitoring app, explain how it works and hand over warranty papers and cleaning advice.

How to vet a solar company

Karachi has many sellers and installers. Ask these questions of any company, including us, before you pay an advance.

  • Do they give an itemised written quote? If the quote only says "5 kW system complete", you cannot compare it.
  • Who files the K-Electric application? Net billing applications in Karachi go through a PPIB pre-qualified vendor. If a company says it will file yours, ask to see its PPIB certificate.
  • Who gives the warranty? Get the terms in writing for panels, inverter, battery and workmanship.
  • Do they visit the site before quoting? A quote given without seeing the roof is a guess.
  • What happens after installation? Ask who you call when the inverter shows a fault and how fast they respond.

Karachi site issues an installer should plan for

Salt-laden air. Karachi is on the coast. Mild steel rusts quickly there. Ask for hot-dip galvanised steel or aluminium mounting, and stainless or coated fasteners.

Wind. The sea breeze is steady and storms bring strong gusts. The structure must be anchored properly to the slab or the beam, not just weighted down.

Roof ownership. K-Electric lists unconfirmed roof ownership among reasons it can reject a grid-connected application. If you rent or share a roof in a building, sort out permission first.

Earthing and the distribution board. K-Electric also lists earthing problems among rejection reasons. Poor earthing is a safety risk too, so the installer should test it.

Dust and access. Panels need washing. A safe path to every row makes regular cleaning realistic.

Installation and survey charges

Installation is often included in a system price. When it is quoted on its own, the rate depends on roof access and cable length.

Why a cheap installation costs more later

Thin mounting steel corrodes. Undersized cable overheats. A missing surge protector can lose you an inverter in one lightning storm. These shortcuts save a small amount on the quote and cost far more within a few years. Ask what the installer will do differently from the cheapest quote you have seen.

FAQs

Questions people ask us

Short answers. For your own property, send us your electricity bill and roof details.

Ask on WhatsApp

Small systems can be done quickly once approvals and equipment are ready. Larger systems and grid approvals take longer. We confirm the schedule in your quote.

You need the right to use the roof. For grid-connected systems you also need utility approval, which goes through a PPIB pre-qualified vendor. We install the system but do not file the application ourselves.

Warranty repairs are done by the brand, and we do all other after-sales service. Ask us about cleaning or service visits when you request your estimate, and we confirm the terms in writing.

You should receive a working system, a tour of the monitoring app, warranty papers, the as-built wiring details and cleaning advice.

It depends on whether you have the right to use roof space. Shared roofs need the building's agreement. Tell us about your building and we will advise.
