The three types of solar inverter

An inverter turns the direct current from your panels into the alternating current your home uses. The type you choose decides how the system behaves when the grid goes down.

On-grid inverters run alongside K-Electric supply. They are the cheapest option and need no battery. They shut down when the grid fails, by design, so they give no backup during load-shedding.

Off-grid inverters run the house from panels and batteries and ignore the grid. They suit places without reliable supply, but you must size the batteries for every night.

Hybrid inverters do both. They use solar first, charge batteries, and keep the house running when the grid drops. Most Karachi homes with long outages choose hybrid.

How to size an inverter

Start with the loads you need to run at the same time. Add up the running watts of the fans, lights, fridge, TV and any air conditioner that will run together. That total sets the minimum inverter size.

Motors need extra attention. An air conditioner compressor or a water pump draws several times its running power for a moment at start-up. The inverter must handle that surge or it will trip. Check the surge rating on the datasheet.

Next, match the inverter to the panel array. Many installers size the array at roughly the same size as the inverter, or a little larger. A 5 kW inverter with about 5 to 6 kW of panels is a common pairing. Your installer should confirm the limits of the inverter inputs.

What to check on the datasheet

Ask for the manufacturer datasheet for any inverter you consider. These lines matter most.

Why monitoring matters now

Since the move to net billing, what your system exports earns much less than what it saves by being used at home. A monitoring app shows how much of your solar power you use and how much goes to the grid. Ask whether the inverter you choose has a monitoring app and whether it works over Wi-Fi.

Brands you will see in the Karachi market

Inverex, Solis, Huawei, Sungrow, GoodWe, Growatt, Crown and Max Power are all sold in Pakistan. Each brand has models at different price levels. The brand matters less than three things: the exact model, the warranty terms in writing, and whether someone local can service it.

Ask the seller where the inverter will be repaired if it fails and how long that takes. An inverter that sits in a workshop for weeks leaves you without backup in the hottest months.

FAQs

Questions people ask us

Short answers. For your own property, send us your electricity bill and roof details.

Ask on WhatsApp

No. An on-grid inverter switches off when the grid fails, for safety. For backup during outages you need a hybrid inverter with batteries.

It depends on the AC model and whether it is an inverter type. Check the rated power and the starting surge on the AC label, then add your other loads. We size it for you after we see the appliances.

If your area has long power cuts, yes. A hybrid inverter keeps the house running and uses solar to charge batteries. If outages are short and rare, an on-grid system may be enough.

There is no single best brand. Compare the datasheet, the warranty terms and local service. We can show you the options that fit your load and budget.

Usually not. Most on-grid inverters cannot control batteries. If you may want backup later, choose a hybrid inverter now.
