How size sets the price
Price rises with the kilowatt rating, but not in a straight line. A 6 kW inverter costs less per kilowatt than a 3 kW one, as long as the extra size is useful to you.
The danger is buying size you do not need. A large inverter with a small load wastes money. A small inverter with a large load trips in the heat. Size from your loads, then compare prices.
The table below shows what each common size can usually carry. The numbers are approximate.

What each size can usually run
Running power of appliances varies by model. Read the label on yours.

Add the loads that run at the same time. Allow for start-up surge on air conditioners, fridges and pumps.
How to size the inverter yourself
A short method you can do with a pen and your appliance labels.

List the loads for a cut
Write each appliance you want running during an outage.

Add the running watts
Use the label. The total is the minimum backup output.

Allow for the surge
Motors draw several times their running power for a moment. Check the surge rating of the inverter.

Add room to grow
If you may add an AC later, size up now or choose an inverter that can be paralleled.

Match the array
Many installers pair the inverter with panels of about the same size, or a little larger. Check the PV input limits.
Panels are not the same as inverter size
A 5 kW array does not always need a 5 kW inverter, and the reverse is true too. The inverter size sets the maximum power at any moment, and the array size sets how much energy you collect over a day. Ask your installer for both numbers. Our system size guide shows how they fit together.
Phase and brand
Single-phase inverters suit most homes. Three-phase inverters suit most factories and many shops. Check your meter before you order.
