Solar Inverters
Inverter types, sizing, brands and what to check before you buy.
An inverter fault is rarely a mystery. The screen, the code and a few facts usually point to the cause. Here is how to handle a fault and who repairs what.

We want to be clear about this first. Warranty repairs are done by the brand of the inverter, not by us. If an inverter we installed fails under warranty, we file the claim with the brand, wait for the brand to approve it and then replace the part. For Crown, we replace the product for the full warranty period and send the faulty unit back to the company.
Beyond warranty repair, we do all other after-sales service on systems we installed. We do not claim to repair inverter boards. If a fault is outside warranty, we tell you what we can look at and what must go back to the brand or a repair centre.
General causes. Codes differ by brand, so read your manual.
| What you see | Likely cause | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter will not switch on | Battery breaker off, low battery or a tripped DC isolator | Check the isolators and the battery voltage on the display |
| Grid fault or over-voltage code | Grid voltage or frequency outside limits | Note the code and the time. It may clear when the grid settles. |
| Overload alarm | Load above the rating, or a surge from a motor | Switch off heavy loads and restart |
| Over-temperature alarm | Poor airflow or a hot, closed space | Clear the vents, shade the unit, check the fan |
| Battery fault | Voltage mismatch, loose cable or a failing battery | Check connections with the system off and call us |
| No panel input | Tripped DC breaker, a bad connector or night time | Check the PV breaker and the display for string voltage |
| Buzzing or clicking | Relay switching on a poor supply | Note when it happens and tell us |
This saves a lot of time on the phone.
Read them from the label on the side of the unit.
Photograph the screen. Write down any code and any lit indicators.
Note the time, the weather and what was running.
A new appliance, a storm, a long grid cut or a new battery are all worth mentioning.
Say if you restarted the unit or switched a breaker.
The inside of an inverter carries high voltage from the panels and the battery, and some of it stays live after you switch off. Opening the case is dangerous and usually voids the warranty. Leave it to the brand or a qualified technician.
Within the warranty period the answer follows the warranty terms. Outside it, the choice is a cost comparison. Ask for the repair quote in writing, with the parts and the time, and compare it with the price of a new unit that carries its own warranty.
An old inverter that has had several repairs may be nearing the end of its life. A new one with a longer warranty can be the better buy, and our hybrid inverter guide shows what to compare.
A repair by someone other than the brand or its approved centre may void the warranty on that unit. Before you hand an inverter to a workshop, ask the brand what it allows. Keep every document, including the invoice, the warranty paper and the repair record.
Protection helps avoid faults. Surge protection and correct earthing guard against lightning and grid spikes, and our breakers and SPD guide explains them.
Short answers. For your own property, send us your electricity bill and roof details.
Ask on WhatsAppWarranty repairs are done by the brand. We file the claim and replace the part after approval. We do all other after-sales service. Tell us the fault and we will say what we can do.
Codes differ by brand. Note the code, photograph the screen and tell us the model. Many faults come from the grid, overload or heat.
No. It carries high voltage and opening it usually voids the warranty.
It depends on the brand's approval time. We keep you informed once we file.
Compare the written repair quote with the price of a new unit and its warranty.
