Two kinds of solar geyser

When people in Karachi say solar geyser, they mean one of two things. A solar thermal water heater uses sunlight directly to heat water in collectors on the roof. An electric geyser run from a home solar system uses panels, an inverter and a heating element.

The first uses sunlight for heat and needs no inverter. The second is simpler to fit but draws a lot of electricity. The two have different costs, different upkeep and different results, so choose before you ask for a price.

Karachi winters are mild and sunshine is plentiful, with about 8.1 hours a day on average, so solar thermal suits the climate well.

Sizing the tank

A common rule of thumb is about 30 to 50 litres of hot water per person per day, depending on habits. A family of five therefore needs roughly 150 to 250 litres. A 150 litre tank fits a small household. A 300 litre tank suits a larger family or a guesthouse.

To see why electric heating is costly, work out the energy. Heating 150 litres of water by 30°C takes about 5.2 kWh. That is a large part of a day of output from a small solar array, before any other load. A solar thermal heater collects that heat from the sun directly.

If your hot water use is only for a short morning shower, the saving is smaller. Tell us how many people use hot water and when.

What to ask before you buy

The quality of a solar geyser lies in details you cannot see from the road.

  • Type of collector. Flat plate or evacuated tube. Ask about the build and the warranty.
  • Low-pressure or pressurised. A tank-fed low-pressure heater is simpler. A pressurised one suits taps and showers on a higher floor.
  • Tank insulation. It decides whether the water is still hot the next morning.
  • Electric backup element. A backup helps on cloudy days. Ask how it is wired and controlled.
  • Water quality. Hard or salty water leaves scale in tubes and tanks. Ask how to flush it.
  • Roof space and weight. The collector and the full tank must sit on a safe, flat, sunny spot.

Is it worth it for your home?

A solar thermal heater pays off most where hot water use is steady and the alternative is expensive electricity or a gas supply that is unreliable. If your house already has a good gas supply and light hot water use, the payback is slower. We tell you honestly which case fits. Roughly 30 to 50 litres per person per day. A family of five often uses a 150 to 250 litre system.

At a lower output. A backup element or your existing geyser can cover cloudy days.

A solar thermal heater uses sunlight for heat and needs no inverter, so it is efficient. An electric geyser on solar is simpler to fit but draws a lot of power.

Yes. Tubes, tank and fittings need checks, and hard water needs flushing. Ask for care advice when you order.
