Solar Appliances
Solar AC, geyser, lights, pumps and fans: how to power each one.
A pump uses power only when it runs, and it runs best in the day. That makes water pumping a good fit for solar, if the pump matches the job.

A pump fills a tank. The tank stores the water, so the pump does not need to run at night. That means no battery is needed, which is a big saving over most solar uses.
Pumping also matches the sun. You want the most water when it is hot and sunny, and that is when the panels give the most power.
Pump only. Panels, controller, pipe and tank are separate.

Which one fits depends on your water source.
| Type | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| DC pump | Runs straight from panels through a controller | Small wells, gardens, tanks |
| AC pump with a solar drive | A solar pump drive runs a standard AC pump | Larger flows, easy to service |
| AC pump on a hybrid system | Runs on the home inverter | Homes that already have solar |
| Submersible | Sits in the well or bore | Deep water |
| Surface | Sits above ground | Shallow tanks and storage |
An illustrative sum. Get the real head and flow from your well and your tank.
This is the vertical lift from the water level to the tank outlet, plus an allowance for pipe friction. Say 30 m.
Say 5 cubic metres an hour.
The rule of thumb is flow times head times 2.725. That is 5 times 30 times 2.725, or about 409 W of water power.
A small pump may be 40 percent efficient overall. 409 divided by 0.4 is about 1,020 W of electric power.
Add a margin for heat and dust. Around 1.5 kW of panels, so three 585 W panels, suits this case.
The water level, the yield and the depth decide what pump fits. A pump larger than the well can supply runs dry and burns out. Measure the water level and ask how fast the well refills before you choose.

Ask on WhatsAppUsually not. The pump fills a tank in the day and the tank stores the water.
It depends on the flow and the total head. Multiply them, and ask us to check the sum.
Yes, an AC pump can run on a hybrid inverter if the surge is within its rating.
DC pumps are simple and good for small jobs. AC pumps on a solar drive suit larger flows and are easy to service.
It depends on the pump, the well and the drive. Send the details and we will quote.
