What the structure has to survive
The stand carries the weight of the panels and the force of the wind on a large flat surface. A panel acts like a sail, so a gust pushes and lifts it.
Karachi adds salt air, humidity of about 61 percent on average and summer heat. Mild steel with a thin coating can rust through faster on the coast than inland. A poor stand can fail in a storm, or loosen slowly until panels shift.
That is why the structure deserves as much attention as the panels.

Galvanised steel or aluminium
Both can work. They differ in weight, rust behaviour and cost.

The quality of the coating and the build matter more than the metal name. Ask for coating thickness or a make-and-finish description.
Tilt and direction
A fixed tilt close to the latitude of Karachi suits year-round output, and panels should face south. Your installer can refine this for your roof.
A flat roof lets you choose the tilt. A sloped roof usually fixes it. In both cases, leave space between rows so one row does not shade the next in the morning and afternoon.
Questions to ask about any structure
These decide how long it lasts.
- Is it hot-dip galvanised or aluminium, and what is the coating?
- Are bolts and clamps stainless or coated?
- How are the legs fixed to the slab or beam? Bolts hold better than loose weights.
- Was it designed for the panel size, including large panels?
- Is there space under the frame for the water tank and for cleaning?
- Is it earthed, and is the earth tested?
Raised frames
On many Karachi roofs the water tank, stair room and parapet shade the panels. A raised frame can lift the array clear of shade and leave a path underneath. It uses more steel, so it costs more. Ask for a shade check at the survey. The installation cost guide shows how height changes the price.
