Lights for small jobs

This page covers the smaller solar lights: wall lights, garden lights, gate lights and floodlights for a yard. For lights on poles along lanes and roads, see our solar street lights guide.

A solar light has a panel, a battery, a lamp and a sensor. In the day the panel charges the battery. At dusk the sensor switches the lamp on. No cable, no meter and no bill.

Where to place them

Placement matters as much as the product.

  • Sun for the panel. A panel in shade does not charge. Put it where it gets sun for most of the day.
  • Height. Mount lights high enough to cover the area and avoid casual tampering.
  • Away from other lights. A sensor lamp near a street lamp may switch itself off.
  • Salt air. Near the coast, choose coated or galvanised fixings.
  • Reach. Leave room to wipe the panel and reach the switch.

Why the light dims after a few months

A small battery that is charged and drained every day ages fast. The common signs are a lamp that runs for fewer hours and one that dims early in the night. Dust on the panel makes it worse. Wipe the panel now and then, and choose a light with a stated battery type and a warranty on it.

When a solar light is the wrong tool

For security lighting that must switch on every night without fail, a mains-powered light with a backup from your inverter may be more dependable. A solar light is best for places where running a cable is hard or costly.

If you already have a hybrid system, adding an outdoor LED light to your inverter board is often cheaper than buying many small solar lights, and it uses the same battery.
